A Pair of Men Detained Regarding Mobile Device Concealed in Commons to Allegedly Play Inappropriate Sounds At Prime Minister's Questions

Law enforcement have taken into custody two men related to a cellular device discovered hidden within the House of Commons, which was reportedly intended to emit inappropriate audio throughout the weekly parliamentary session.

Discovery and Probe

The device was located close to the frontbench in the course of a routine sweep of the chamber. It is believed it was meant to interrupt the regular debate between Keir Starmer and Kemi Badenoch in the autumn month.

A police representative stated, “At 10.25 on that specific date, a device was discovered during a routine search of the parliamentary hall.”

Detentions and Allegations

Investigations led officers to believe that the phone was deliberately placed in a spot with the intention of creating interference to business in the chamber.

  • An individual in his thirties was arrested on Friday 5 September on suspected grounds of trying to deliberately cause a public nuisance.
  • A second person in his 60s was taken into custody on the following Tuesday on allegations of the identical charge.
  • The two have been released on bail to appear at a future time.

Precautions and Consequences

Increased precautions were introduced in the House of Commons after the phone was discovered. Audio tours and escorted visits were called off, and there was limited entry to the Commons chamber.

The House of Lords followed suit to reduce access to the Lords Chamber “for safety reasons.”

The spokesperson noted, “Investigations continue, and we continue to keep the parliamentary officials informed with our investigation.”

Seriousness of the Incident

This incident is being treated seriously as it constitutes a major breach of parliamentary security. The phone was located while hundreds security staff based in the parliamentary area were on industrial action over pay and conditions.

As a result, visitors were banned from the parliamentary estate. The union explained that the work stoppage proceeded due to reduction of annual leave entitlements, stagnant pay, and an wage disparity based on race.
