Australia Remains Cagey on Second Ashes Test XI, Possibility Still Ajar for Pat Cummins' Comeback
The lineup for the second Ashes Test remains unknown under 24 hours before the first ball in the Gabba, with a further inspection of the Gabba pitch required before the hosts finalize a squad that may yet include Pat Cummins.
Acting Skipper Steve Smith Hints at Possibility for Surprise Recall
Acting skipper Steve Smith spoke to an journalists on the eve of the Test but was not disclosing the exact make-up of the team. However, he left the door open a shock return for Cummins, who was unavailable for the series opener due to a back injury.
“He seems quite impressive to me, the way he’s bowled in the nets,” the stand-in captain stated. “Naturally match intensity differs, but he’s progressing very well, he is aware of his condition.”
Late Draft Remains a Live Option
The fast bowler was not initially selected in Australia’s 15-man squad for the Brisbane Test, but nonetheless went to Brisbane to continue his recovery with the team. Smith indicated he was on the right track and might still be called up at the final moment.
“The decision is pending but like I said, he’s close,” the captain added. “He’s done his work the last little bit and we’ll see this afternoon when we look at that pitch whether he’s a possibility or not.”
Selection Conundrums Ahead if He Returns
A return to the side for Cummins, which was in doubt just a few days ago, would lead to recent Test player Brendan Doggett or even experienced spinner Nathan Lyon being omitted.
Smith would not confirm Lyon’s place in the team when asked about the spinner's selection.
“Not sure,” he said. “We’ll look at the pitch as I said and sum things up from there. Here’s a place Nathan has performed brilliantly in the past, he’s a top performer. We will consider the choices and see how we go.”
Batters In Contention for Selection
Josh Inglis will also have to see whether he has earned a recall. The player is the prime option to be included in place of the injured Usman Khawaja, with Travis Head likely to take the opening spot again after his brilliant performance in the first Test.
“A heap of things are on the table,” Smith explained. “The decision is pending what the wicket is like and from there we’ll decide on a playing XI.”
“[Inglis] is obviously a very aggressive player,” Smith said. “Did really well on his first Test in the subcontinent, he’s been in great nick... He faces quicks exceptionally. So if he gets the nod I’m sure he’ll do really well for us.”
Last-Minute Decision Pending
In addition to Inglis, Beau Webster is under consideration to be selected at number six, on the expectation that Travis Head partners as opener alongside Jake Weatherald, and Cam Green shifts to No 5.
Smith said a final decision on the team is possible this afternoon, but equally it could be delayed until the day of the match. The Test gets under way at the Brisbane Cricket Ground at 1400 local (1500 AEDT) on tomorrow.
