New research indicates that patients who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals purchasing such treatments need to be cognizant of the danger of quick weight regain when the medication ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to original mass in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Therapies
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually experience a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Understanding the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the injections explains the heightened weight return.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this medication results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Issue?
The NHS suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
Users who have come off the jabs explain a powerful return of hunger.
"I experienced a switch that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.
The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Interest
Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts stress that while the jabs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and long-term success likely depends on ongoing lifestyle support.
