Information Available Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Terrorist Incident
A minimum of 16 individuals lost their lives and more than 40 were hurt when assailants opened fire at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack local police have called a terrorist attack.
As of the newest reports, authorities have stated the number of fatalities is 16, including one of the suspected gunmen. Furthermore, 42 injured people were taken to hospital.
The deceased are still awaiting formally identified, but authorities state their ages are from 10 and 87 years old.
Here are the victims who have been named at this time.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Described as a father of five children, he served as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative remarked.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.
She recounted the moments before the attack, stating they had been standing together when the gunfire erupted. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.
The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
The French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
Officially, the Foreign Minister declared that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the statement continued.
One Child
A child who was rushed to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.
One Israeli Citizen
One victim from Israel was among those killed in the incident, according to reports citing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, many are still receiving treatment, with a number in serious condition. Those hurt include two officers who responded to the attack.
One of the injured is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Hailed as a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he recounted the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he listened to “a large number” of shots.
“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
