International Committee of the Red Cross Assists Militant Group in Search for Bodies of Israeli Hostages in Gaza Strip

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) confirmed that its representatives accompanied Hamas officials into zones of the Gaza Strip still under IDF control to facilitate the hunt for the bodies of individuals held captive.

Ceasefire Terms and Hostage Bodies Handover

Under the truce negotiated by the United States, which took effect on 10 October, the group is required to hand over the bodies of all Israeli hostages promptly. In exchange, the Israeli government has consented to transfer the remains of 15 Palestinians for every Israeli body returned.

The organization has so far handed back the bodies of 15 of those taken hostage but zero in the past five days, as a portion of those remains are believed to be in locations beyond the yellow line designating the temporary truce line.

Red Cross Involvement as Impartial Facilitator

“Upon the appeal of the involved sides, the Red Cross accompanied a party to the conflict as the group searched for the remains of the deceased past the military-established ‘yellow boundary’,” stated a representative for the committee.

She added: “The parties to the conflict determined the procedures of the operation and delegated the ICRC to serve as a impartial mediator. The ICRC was not involved in the discussions.”

The official further explained: “Our team was not involved in the search for the deceased nor does it take part in the retrieval of human remains.”

The news was corroborated by an source within Israel, who told local press that Hamas representatives had been permitted to access sections of the region under Israel Defense Forces (IDF) control to look for the bodies of hostages, alongside Egypt’s and Red Cross teams.

Video published by a media outlet appeared to show members of a Hamas unit – belonging to the group’s military wing tasked with guarding captives – escorting a humanitarian transport in a coastal area near Rafah, which lies outside Israeli military control.

Challenges in Locating Hostage Remains

The search for the bodies of individuals taken captive has turned into one of the most sensitive matters in the truce reached between the two sides. Yet, the attempt to find the remains has been difficult from the beginning, given the existence of an estimated enormous amount of rubble across the territory, where, according to health officials, at least ten thousand residents are listed as missing, trapped under the rubble.

Conflicting Statements on Remains Whereabouts
