Manchester United Poised to Sign Germany Forward Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are finalising completing the signing for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from Bayern Munich.
A Marquee Signing for the WSL Side
Schüller, who has six months remaining on her contract, has been a prolific goal-getter for both club and country. She has netted over 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. Her arrival will be seen as a major signing for the WSL team.
Departure from Munich was expected after she was seen holding back emotions while applauding the club's fans following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in late December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its top strikers. According to multiple sources, all the paperwork for the transfer are now finalised.
Reliable Goal Threat to Strengthen the Attack
The 28-year-old’s arrival should represent a significant boost to the team's attacking options. She has been remarkably reliable with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.
- Over seven straight seasons, up to and including the last term, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She claimed the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Gathering Momentum at Old Trafford
The acquisition of Schüller’s signature comes at a time when United seem to be gathering momentum.
Recent performances include securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the mid-season window has seen additional business:
- The signing of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since joining in 2023.
Regarding the midfielder's extension, a club official stated: “Miyazawa is now a critical part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability allows her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has arrived from a side from the American league, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
