New York Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Incident
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the player will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during their latest talk.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn commented. “His family, they’re in good spirits and he is expected to recover fully.”
It remained unclear when Boyd would leave the hospital, where he has been listed as serious yet stable.
“Not certain at the moment,” Glenn remarked. “Yet I must mention, just talking to him, he seemed very positive. Once more, that puts my mind at ease, because of his outlook and he’s talking that way.”
NYPD released video stills earlier this week of a man sought in the attack on the player. The reason behind the incident is currently under review and authorities said it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted. No one else was hurt as confirmed by officials.
The shooting happened just after 2am on Sunday morning in the area between the famous arena and Times Square. Boyd, 29, was admitted to a medical center after being shot in the abdomen, according to authorities. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn said Boyd has occupied his thinking “constantly” since he heard about the shooting. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a child.
“The first thing I thought about, he just had a kid,” Glenn noted. “I thought of his spouse, worrying about his newborn and my priority is his well-being. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There’s a process to this, I’ll keep private, but I’m happy at the fact that he will recover excellently.”
Boyd hasn’t played in the present campaign, his first with the Jets, after his season was cut short due to injury on mid-August with an injury to his shoulder that required surgery.
Boyd came to New York as an unrestricted free agent in March and was anticipated to become an important component of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and ST coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during preseason drills on early August and was carted from the field.
Boyd continued to be present all season long while working his way back.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn stated. “I mean, he is a regular at our matches. He’s fully engaged. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”
Boyd, from Texas, began his career with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by the Vikings out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He joined Arizona in last year and later was with the Texans subsequently. Boyd signed a one-year contract valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in the spring.
