A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” affirmed the national leader.
The president confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
