The star has handed over the full amount of his £25k honor prize money to the Music Venues Trust, which functions to protect the UK's small music venues.

The star was given the cheque on October 16 as his latest record People Watching was named the outstanding release of the last 12 months.

He has opted to give the cash to the Music Venues Trust, in acknowledgment of the vital role grassroots venues played in his early career.

"I couldn't be pursuing my current career if it weren't for all the gigs I played around the region, and beyond, when I was just getting going," remarked Sam Fender. "These locations are legendary, but they are facing challenges."

From early 2023 onward, more than 150 of these venues have shut down – roughly 16% of the total UK scene.

In the last year, top acts such as the band Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Sheeran have all backed the MVT in its attempts to help venues survive, by adding a modest fee to their ticket costs, which supports independent venues.

Sam Fender also participated, collecting in excess of £100,000 on his live tour to help numerous small stages across England, Scotland, and Wales.

The money assisted spaces that were dealing with imminent closure due to difficulties stemming from flooding, fires and bereavements, as well as licensing issues, conflicts and noise complaints.

Additional spaces received funding support in modernizing facilities and sound and lighting systems that positively impacted performers and fans.

"The idea that revenue from performances in major spaces backs the independent spots, where it kicks off for performers like me, is just sensible," Fender has said.

He is not the first artist to give his award funds to good deeds.

Back when Pulp earned the award in the year 1996 for their album Different Class, vocalist Jarvis Cocker stated that the act would donate their cash to the charity War Child.

That year, rapper and singer the artist shared her award across several organizations, like the children's charity and a Sickle Cell charity.

"Additionally, I donated a grand to Highgate Newtown, to their gymnastics program, because I did gymnastics when I was growing up and they needed new equipment," Ms Dynamite shared with outlets.

Two years ago, Ezra Collective contributed their funds to the youth organization that nurtured their group, in addition to other grassroots music organisations.

Also winners that year the group gave their award to a charity for MS after a friend was diagnosed the disease.

"Receiving the award was sufficient," said artist Heather Small. "The prize was the extra but we didn't need the cherry, because we had the cake. So our success affected somebody else's life."

In the past week, the Music Venues Trust announced it had saved a couple of grassroots venues in the South East, by placing them under local control.

One venue in the city and The Croft in the city were purchased under the community ownership initiative, which is funded by a national body and enthusiasts who purchase "shares" in the venues.
