The golfing superstar salutes Spoty success with twin accolades.
Moments before the announcement, a trepidatious worry darted through Rory McIlroy's mind. He said he was hoping, "Not a racing champion again."
"It's been a tremendous night for golf," the champion said. "Golf was celebrated in such a big way, with the team winning and then with my award. It's a big night for golf, and with any luck we can capitalize on that."
On this occasion, however, there was no dramatic upset. The result was decisive, allowing a thrilled McIlroy to reflect on a blockbuster evening for both himself and the European Ryder Cup winners, who were honored as the year's best team.
A Whirlwind Schedule
But rather than attend the post-ceremony celebrations, McIlroy was already plotting his immediate plans. Having just played in a tournament in Florida and jetted to the UK, he was returning immediately to Miami.
"The last 24 hours have been a whirlwind 24 hours," McIlroy explained. "I am anticipating a little bit of a break over Christmas."
Unfinished Business
Nevertheless, McIlroy made clear he has no desire to become complacent, despite securing the career grand slam earlier in the year. "My belief is I've got a more to give in me," he claimed.
"Further big titles, order of merit titles, Ryder Cups, that's the aim. But if you feel like you can keep getting better and have the hunger, that's the essential part."
Squad Celebration
At the same time, teammate Tommy Fleetwood, who was on stage to collect the squad honor, also lauded golf's remarkable night and his pal's personal achievement.
"Those are the memories that will remain with us for all time so to get the people's vote for that is truly special," he commented. "Witnessing it Rory win, I think he has earned it so much."
After it was noted that McIlroy was only the third player from golf to win the award in its seven-decade run, Fleetwood chuckled before quipping, "Not a very popular bunch are we!"
Future Goals
His goal is to at last capture his initial major championship next year but he understands McIlroy still thirsts for more success. "Provided that you want to be the best you can be, and you're still driven, you'll find things to work on," Fleetwood explained.
Football Loyalty
Prior to his departure, a last query arose. A devoted Manchester United fan, he has been asked to parade his trophies at Old Trafford before. Might he be convinced to do it again after his new triumphs?
"If they halt the flow of four goals at home," he replied with a grin. "They're getting better. There's a little bit of positivity around."
After a remarkable year, it's no wonder that he is focusing on the upside.
