The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Chose the Incorrect Popular RPG Show Track
This latest animated series, the most recent animated adventure by Critical Role, revealed an exciting opening credits. It features the beloved cast of misfits, outcasts, and criminals fighting hard and taking names, while teasing at multiple agonizing backstories for key figures including Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, Fjord.
All in all, the opening appears stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that something was missing in the music selection.
The intro employs "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional song created by artist the talented musician. It's a track from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second one put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great sentimental choice, and I believe that fans of the sequel series will appreciate its presence.
But for me, The series' intro doesn't quite capture the excitement and energy that accompanied the show's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", written by singer-songwriter the artist, became an immediate hit for me when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it improved further when co-founder the performer added lyrics to the tune for the series' animated intro in 2018.
Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the track was memorable and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't seen the second campaign at that point, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my phone. It's a song that excites you before you start an installment of fantasy hijinks.
The Mighty Nein's opening with "the new song" fails to hit the right notes in my opinion. It's a grand piece of music, but based on my understanding of this party, I can't help but feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.
Of course, the creators has stated that the animated show will have some surprises and variations from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its opening seems to be one of them.
This animated adventure will be available to watch on Prime Video from November 19. If you can't wait before that, or wish to prepare to learn about the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are accessible on Spotify and the video site.
