The retail giant Enforces Purchase Limits on Pokémon Trading Cards
As a notable development, Walmart has started enforcing purchase restrictions on how many Pokémon trading card products customers can acquire during one shopping trip. This new rule was activated starting November 5th, based on an internal announcement distributed to employees.
Addressing Scalper Activity
While not officially confirmed by Walmart, many believe this decision was prompted by a widely shared social media clip that depicted a customer buying an enormous quantity of Pokémon card items at a checkout counter. The store manager seen in the video faced widespread backlash for permitting the bulk transaction to proceed.
Rule Specifics and Possible Weaknesses
The updated guideline specifies that shoppers may only buy up to five trading card packs or boxes per store visit. Yet, the language has raised questions due to its lack of clarity. Precisely what counts as a "box" is not defined, and if someone could still purchase five high-value Elite Trainer Boxes remains ambiguous.
Moreover, because the restriction is based on each visit, in theory a determined scalper could make multiple trips—purchasing the maximum each time—to accumulate large quantities throughout the day.
The Reseller Crisis
For the average collector, such efforts might seem excessive, but for scalpers, it's common behavior. Over the past few seasons, scalpers have greatly contributed to frequent stockouts of Pokémon cards, spurred by the TCG's growing fame.
Certain buyers aim to sell unopened products for a profit, while others search for valuable pulls that can command sky-high values. For instance, the Mega Lucario ex card in recent releases has been listed for over $800 on various platforms.
Looking Ahead
The new rule aligns with the approaching launch of the latest Pokémon expansion, coming on November 14th. Pre-release sales indicate chase cards like the Charizard mega evolution being offered for around fifteen hundred dollars, highlighting the ongoing demand and likely scalper target.
With any luck, the retail limits will help reduce mass buying and improve availability for true fans and casual players alike.
