One two-month voyage around the Australian Coast is being halted days after the tragic passing of an elderly woman who was stranded by the vessel on a remote island.

The elderly woman had been trekking on Lizard Island with fellow passengers from the cruise ship, but broke off from the excursion for a pause. The vessel sailed away leaving her and went back several hours later after the crew discovered the lady was missing.

A major rescue mission discovered her body the following day.

Investigative bodies are investigating the tragedy, alongside police and the official investigator.

Chief Executive of the cruise operator announced that passengers and staff on the Coral Adventurer were notified that the rest of the voyage had been called off due to the "unfortunate death and prior engine troubles".

Via official communication, he further stated that passengers would be given a total repayment, and said the company was working "to arrange the homeward trips of the passengers via private aircraft".

Officials also issued an updated communication, and said they had "provided a notice to the Master" prohibiting any further travelers from entering the vessel.

The representative said that they would attend the vessel in the Australian city upon its arrival.

Sequence of Incidents

The ship originally sailed from the coastal city on the 24th of October, and was merely two days into the expedition at the point of the elderly woman's death. The remote island was the first stop on the journey.

Guests on the vessel - who usually pay substantial amounts of currency to join the voyage - were taken there for a shore visit with the possibility of walking or snorkeling.

Family Response

The child of the elderly passenger said that her loved ones was "surprised and distressed that the ship left the location after an organised tour without my mother".

Via her announcement, she portrayed her mum as an "active 80-year-old" who was a affiliate of a bushwalking organization.

"Based on limited details we have been informed, it appears that there was a lapse of attention and ordinary reasoning," she stated.

She added that she hoped the investigation would be able to identify what "the operator should have done that might have preserved Mum's being".

"Based on information from the authorities that it was a exceptionally warm afternoon, and she became unwell on the mountain ascent," she explained.

"Officials suggested her to head down, alone. Then the ship departed, reportedly without performing a headcount.

"During some point in that sequence, or shortly after, she succumbed, by herself."

Organization Reaction

Through an announcement, the CEO affirmed that the operator was "collaborating extensively with authorities to support their investigation".

He stated that the organization was "very regretful that this has occurred" and had extended its full support to the relatives.

Shipping Sector Procedures

The ship caters for up to 120 guests with nearly fifty personnel, according to official details. It was purpose-built to access distant locations of the nation's coast and is fitted with "tenders" - compact vessels used to ferry individuals on shore trips.

Incidents like this are uncommon, and cruise ships have systems to record which passengers are embarking or leaving, according to industry experts.

"Going ashore secretly or [back] aboard just isn't an option," an authority commented.

Vessel operators consider these procedures extremely carefully and have "clever tech in place to prevent such incidents from occurring," the authority added.

"This seems to be probably a shocking - and unfortunate - one-off."
